What can I say about my oldest brother Matt? Quite a lot really and like any person, he is hard to describe in one sitting completely as a person, but I’ll attempt to give a good summary of him. Matt is my senior by nearly eight years, and having had eight more years of experience than me, he is loathe to let me forget it. But in truth, I could not want another person leading the way for Marc (the middle child in our family) and I, throughout this crazy experiment we call life. I often enjoy and sometimes attempt to abide by Matt’s copious and unerring advice. It is in large part because of Matt that I am the person I am today. Specifically, it is through Matt’s encouragement and example that I love to travel so heavily. It is also by learning through his example that I find myself often leading people and loving to be around people as much as I do. Matt is a brilliant engineer, with his Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering from NCSU (North Carolina State University). He is also quite an athlete, having played basketball and other sports for years, and eventually picking up crew (rowing), Australian rules football, and mountain biking. Furthermore, Matt is perhaps one of the most beloved people I have met with a highly gregarious personality and sense of humor to match.
For some reason, no one can seem to get enough of this guy, which is all well and good, even though he can be a wee bit vulgar on occasion and ornery to boot. Of course, part of his vast charm is that he usually incorporates and excites less enthusiastic and outgoing people, but in a very warm, welcoming and open-armed sort of way. From his precedent I have tried to learn a few of these skills for myself, but sometimes to less avail. Part of Matt’s personality, which delights and irritates me is his stubborn and often controversial style... what this means is that Matt will very often argue and play devil’s advocate with someone, or take a side on a given issue opposite of the majority, just to stir people up. Of course, Matt is not only bullocks and adversity, he has a less seen soft side too. Sometimes, Matt will come down with melancholy and pessimism about the world, as I suppose we all do. Sometimes he displays a very touching amount of sorrow and introspection often lost on others, and this shows to me anyway, that he is a deep man full of humanity and dynamism. But, he is always my oldest brother, and I love him dearly.
Check out some pictures of him, as well as his Round the World
