Zach Morin

I have been friends with Zach since 1994 if not earlier and consider him to be one of my closest and greatest friends. Zach is an odd character to those who first meet him, but he has a great heart and an even better mind. We met through his brother Brandon though I don't remember the circumstances precisely. Zach and I really started hanging out in middle school during lunch of the 1994-1995 school year and I really grew to admire his amazing abilities as a person straight away. I do recall that I always thought he was exceptionally intelligent and the more I hang out with him, the more I come to that conclusion. One particular instance I remember being impressed with Zach's brainy prowess was when I asked to use the phone, to which Zach obliged me, when I picked up, I heard the eerily high shrills of a modem (back in the day) and soon thereafter, Maxine, his mother yelling at Zach for disturbing her connection. Afterward, Zach replied by asking if it would be okay if he turned on the television and perhaps went to the bathroom, to which she responded by saying he was being a smart ass, and Zach then said that was not the case, he just didn't think he needed to ask permission to do commonplace tasks, such as use the phone. For some reason, at the time, I thought this was a very clever way to illustrate his point, and I suppose it is not so much in what he said as in the way he said it. Zach has always impressed me with his uncanny comprehension, and absolute use of logic.

Zach to me is the antithesis of human reason, he knows, understands and computes at an exceptional level, so much so that it seems at times like he lacks other less rational emotions. Though I am sure that is not the case, I do believe that Zach's logic and rationality conquer his ability to simply cut loose and emote at times. The queer thing about this to me, is that Zach can have a great violent streak (especially while enebriated) and often he seems to have what I would deem aggression or anger, this is not to say that he would ever hurt anyone as Zach is probably the most self-controlled person I've ever met in my life, but he certainly can get less than sympathetic rather fast if he feels someone is being stupid (compared to Zach they usually are). One thing that bewilders me about him is his highly critical nature on things like music and art because he feels they are a waste of time, but on the other hand he really enjoys: movies, things comedic and he plays (I feel) video games constantly. I assume he likes video games so much, because they stimulate his mind and give him something to preoccupy himself with. One thing I feel pity for the world more than him about is the fact that he never really seems to have a love life. This surprises me because he is so self-assured and brilliant, and I believe it would benefit a girl deeply to earn his affection, of course that is pure speculation. I suppose I really write this because, I have often seen in Zach (from knowing him for so long) his deep compassion and understanding of people, though I feel that he is often ashamed of these qualities. He owns to some level a pride in his machismo and I believe he feels anything else is a sign of weakness. Really, Zach is an extremely strong but quite individual, who seldom errs but rarely takes chances, I admire a great deal about him and hope he gets all he hopes for in life.
